Sports Premium
The Department for Education is doubling the funding that primary schools receive to improve the quality of their PE and sport provision from £160 million to £320 million a year. The PE and Sport Premium is part of a series of programmes led by the department to improve healthy lifestyles amongst pupils and tackle childhood obesity.
There are 5 key indicators that schools should expect to see improvement across:
- the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
- the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole - school improvement
- increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- increased participation in competitive sport
How much PE and sports premium funding has Buntingford First School received for this financial year?
Please refer to the document Premium-Template-2023-2024-BFS.pdf
Schools are to determine their own spending, looking to improve the quality and breadth of PE / sport, looking to increase participation, encourage healthy lifestyles and improve the quality of provision.
The outline of our aims is detailed below:
- Implement forest school provision through a qualified Forest School teacher.
- Ensuring high quality teaching for all through CPD opportunities and high quality resources
- Increase the number and variety of sports clubs available to pupils.
- Offer high quality resources to support pupils being active from a young age, enabling their gross motor development in the early years.
How has the funding been used to enhance the quality of PE and sport at Buntingford First School?
All pupils at Buntingford First School have access to high quality PE every week across a range of areas such as gymnastics, dance, athletics and games. As a brand new school we have a range of facilities to support our physical development; curriculum lessons take place on our school field, our large school hall or our MUGA.
This year we have been keen to set up a wide range of clubs that pupils can access. With the support of Sports Premium we have been able to provide a Forest Fun club; speed stacking; dance and hoops club. The aim is to use this funding to provide opportunities and develop talent to create a sporting legacy at the school.
As a school passionate about caring for our environment, we have been able to set up our own Forest School provision to enable pupils to engage in broader physical activities. Teachers have utilised this as a valuable CPD opportunity to learn more about the Forest School provision.
What has the impact been so far on participation and attainment?
Pupil participation in extra-curricular clubs has increased over the year, with a wider range of clubs being offered KS1 and KS2 students attending extra-curricular clubs. 30% of our KS1 and KS2 PP students take part in a club, we will be aiming to increase this further in the future.
As this is our first year we cannot compare our attainment to previous years but we have seen clear progress over the year from pupils in all year groups, particularly regarding EYFS Physical Development skills.
Professional Development:
Some of the funding has also been used for the professional development of our teachers, to ensure that all staff have the best training in order to deliver high quality provision to our students. So far funding has been used to run:
- Coaching for staff and TAs in Forest School
- Support of Complete PE in our first year of curriculum delivery
Resources:
We have been able to support our teaching and clubs at Buntingford First School, through the purchasing of new equipment. This includes: gymnastics equipment, speed stacking cups, forest school equipment, playground equipment, EYFS equipment to support the development of gross motor skills.
The future:
As our school continues to grow over the next few years, we will be eligible for more funding, which we intend to use to continue to improve PE and sport provision at Buntingford First School. Our aim is to enable more opportunities to participate in competitions and extra-curricular clubs. We also would like to work towards the School Games Mark in the future.
